Leading IT Services, business solutions and outsourcing firm Tata Consultancy Services plans to hire 25,000 people this year, a move that is likely to give a fillip to the country’s IT recruitment scene which is seeing a slowdown since the collapse of Lehman Brothers last September.
“We have an employee strength of 1.45 lakh people and we want to add 25,000 more people this year,” a PTI report quoted TCS vice president (Head Global Government Industry Group) Tanmoy Chakrabarty as saying in Chandigarh.He added that the company hopes to raise the revenue for government projects to at least 10 per cent of the total revenue in the next three years.
TCS also reportedly said it was hoping to implement the Centre’s ambitious Rs 1,000-crore ‘Passport Seva Project’ at six pilot locations in October this year and will take this number to 77 by June 2010.
As the clouds of Economic recession, which had hit campus placements a year ago, are gradually fading away the placements at various institutes in the country are picking up. Premier engineering institutes like BITS and MNIT have confirmed to have received better response from the major hiring firms as compared to the previous year.
“There is a noticeable improvement in the recruitment in BITS’ Pilani campus as compared to the previous year. Intake of students per company is certainly more this year,” said Prof Das Gupta, who looks after the placements at BITS. Alok Ranjan, placement officer of MNIT, said, “This year core companies have showed interest in hiring students. Till date, 65 students have got placed in major companies against 400 qualified students.”

The number of students getting hired by Multi National Companies from the premier IITs and IIMs has dipped over the past few years. The major blow has come from the recession. However, the outlook isn’t as grim for Indian Companies, which are still recruiting students at numbers comparable to their earlier intakes. In 2008 , MNCs hired around 3000 IIT grads and Indian Private Sector firms hired around 1600. In 2009, the number of grads hired by MNCs fell to 1600, while the number hired by Indian Private Sector firms actually increased.
Similar figures are available for job offers in the IIMs – with the same trend appearing. In 2008, MNC hiring stood at around 900 across the 6 IIMs and Indian Private Sector hiring clocked around 500. In 2009, the MNC hiring figure dipped to 500, while the number of hires by Indian Private Sector firms grew to 700!
With competitive salaries, good infrastructure and promising career growth, Indian Private Sector Firms might as well become coveted employers for IIT & IIM grads in the times to come.
